How to Run a Business That Does Not Need You

By Dr. Connor Robertson

The title of Built to Run contains a paradox that most founders struggle with: if the business does not need you, what is your role? The answer is that your role becomes the most important one: architect, not operator.

Operator vs. Architect

An operator solves problems. An architect builds systems that prevent problems. An operator makes decisions. An architect creates frameworks that enable others to make good decisions. The transition from operator to architect is the central challenge of growing any business beyond its founder.

The Three Systems Every Business Needs

In my experience, every business that runs without its founder has three things in place: documented processes (so anyone can execute), clear metrics (so anyone can measure), and a culture of accountability (so anyone can be held to a standard). Miss any one of these and the founder gets pulled back in.

The Litmus Test

Here is a simple test: can you take a two-week vacation without checking your phone? If yes, your business is built to run. If no, you have work to do. The good news is that the work is straightforward, even if it is not easy. It starts with documentation, moves through delegation, and ends with a business that has real value independent of your daily involvement.
